Importing equipment for a petrochemical plant or a large industrial project is not the same as moving regular commercial cargo. With a normal shipment, the process can be fairly straightforward — the cargo arrives, clears customs, moves to a warehouse or directly to the customer, and the job is done. Project cargo is different. A new plant may need reactors, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, compressors, pumps, transformers, specialised machinery and a long list of smaller components. Some of these items can be extremely heavy or oversized. Others may be manufactured specifically for that particular project — and there's usually a deadline attached to every shipment. If one important piece of equipment arrives late, it may not just mean one delayed delivery. Why Project Cargo Needs a Different Approach

The first obvious difference is size — a large reactor or pressure vessel may not fit into a standard container, and it certainly cannot be moved using an ordinary truck. But size and weight aren't the only concerns. Crane capacity, berth availability, lifting arrangements, storage space and road connectivity can all matter. A port that looks closest to the project site may not necessarily be the best option. The better question is which port can safely handle this particular equipment and provide a practical connection to the project site — that may lead to a different answer from simply choosing the nearest port.

Handling Large Equipment Requires Preparation

Large industrial equipment needs to be handled carefully. Depending on the cargo, heavy-lift cranes, specialised trailers or other equipment may be required, and the logistics team needs to understand details such as the equipment's centre of gravity, lifting points, dimensions and weight. These aren't just technical details for the engineering team — they directly affect how the cargo will be lifted, loaded, transported and eventually positioned at the project site. What If the Project Site Isn't Ready?

This happens more often than people expect. The equipment arrives in India, customs formalities are completed, the transporter is ready — but the project site isn't. Perhaps construction has been delayed, or the installation team isn't ready to receive the equipment. The equipment still has to go somewhere. This is where project cargo warehousing becomes useful. These may not require heavy-lift transportation, but they're still important. A large machine can be sitting perfectly at the project site and still not be usable because one small component hasn't arrived. Storage Conditions and Planning for What Can Go Wrong

Project equipment may need to remain in storage for days, weeks or sometimes longer.
