Choosing Between SPMTs, Multi-Axle Trailers, and Cranes for Heavy Cargo

Choosing between an SPMT, a multi-axle trailer, and a crane isn't about which one looks biggest or most powerful. It comes down to the cargo's dimensions and weight, the route it needs to travel, the site conditions at both ends, and how precisely it needs to be positioned at the finish.
Start With the Cargo, Not the Equipment
Moving heavy project cargo is not just about finding the biggest truck or crane. Every project is different. A transformer, reactor, pressure vessel or industrial module may need to travel from a port to a project site, move through congested areas and finally be positioned with precision.
The equipment should be selected based on cargo dimensions, weight distribution, route, ground conditions, available space and the final installation requirement. For pressure vessels and certain other regulated equipment, the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) is the body whose rules may apply, depending on the equipment.
Where Multi-Axle Trailers Make Sense
Multi-axle trailers are a proven solution for heavy transport. They can distribute high loads across multiple axles and are ideal for long-distance movement when the route is suitable for road transport. They work well when the cargo can be carried without the extreme manoeuvrability needed inside a congested site. Factors like road geometry, bridge capacities, gradients, overhead clearances and permits all influence the final setup. For national highway stretches, the National Highways Authority of India is a useful reference point.
When an SPMT Becomes More Useful
A Self-Propelled Modular Transporter (SPMT) offers high manoeuvrability and can be configured in different ways to suit the cargo. It has its own power and steering, allowing sideways movement and tight-radius turns. This makes it ideal for plant moves, module transportation and operations within restricted areas where conventional trailers may struggle. Hydraulic suspension also allows the platform height to be adjusted during operations.
SPMT Does Not Mean "No Engineering Required"
The manoeuvrability of an SPMT should not be confused with simplicity. Detailed engineering is essential to assess stability, load distribution, ground bearing pressure and movement path. Factors such as acceleration, braking, wind and road camber can affect the cargo. In many cases, ground preparation, steel plates or other measures may be required, depending on the site conditions.
And Then There Is the Crane
A crane solves a different problem. Trailers and SPMTs help move the cargo, while a crane helps lift and position it. Cranes are required for loading and unloading at ports, transferring cargo between transport systems and final installation at the project site. The type and capacity of crane will depend on the cargo weight, radius, available space and site conditions. In many projects, cranes and SPMTs work together.
Key Factors to Consider
When deciding between an SPMT, multi-axle trailer or crane, consider: cargo weight, size and centre of gravity; route survey and road conditions; turning radius and available space; load-bearing points and support arrangement; ground bearing capacity; height restrictions and overhead clearances; loading and unloading method; final installation position; required equipment configuration; permits and regulatory approvals; site conditions and weather; and project timeline and coordination. A Practical Example
Consider a hypothetical scenario: a large reactor arriving at an Indian port such as Dahej. It is first lifted from the vessel using a heavy-lift crane and placed onto an SPMT for movement within the port. The same SPMT then transports the reactor to the project site, where it is again lifted using a high-capacity crane and positioned onto the foundation. This combination ensures safe movement and precise installation.
