How to Calculate CBM for Freight Shipping: Formula, Examples & Tools

CBM — Cubic Meter — is the standard unit for measuring cargo volume in international freight. Whether shipping by sea, air, or land, understanding CBM calculation correctly can save thousands in freight costs. What is CBM in Freight?

CBM stands for Cubic Meter — the universally accepted unit for cargo volume in sea freight, air freight, and road transport. Freight charges are based on actual weight or volumetric weight, whichever is higher. CBM Formula

CBM = Length (m) × Width (m) × Height (m) × Quantity If dimensions are in centimeters: CBM = (L cm ÷ 100) × (W cm ÷ 100) × (H cm ÷ 100) × Qty Example: A carton 60cm × 40cm × 50cm, quantity 100 boxes: = (0.60 × 0.40 × 0.50) × 100 = 0.12 × 100 = 12 CBM For multiple item types, calculate CBM for each and sum.

Container CBM Capacity Guide

Standard container usable volumes: • 20ft Standard: 25 CBM, max 21,700 kg • 40ft Standard: 55 CBM, max 26,500 kg • 40ft High Cube: 67 CBM, max 26,500 kg LCL (Less than Container Load): you pay per CBM. FCL (Full Container Load): flat rate for entire container — economical above 15–18 CBM. FCL vs LCL — a worked comparison: Say LCL freight runs roughly $45–65 per CBM (rates vary by route and season) and a 20ft FCL container costs a flat rate regardless of how full it is. At 12 CBM, LCL is usually cheaper. At 18+ CBM, the flat FCL rate typically wins — which is why 15–18 CBM is the commonly cited break-even zone. Worked Example: Mixed Cargo Shipment

Most real shipments aren't a single product. Here's how to calculate total CBM across mixed cargo: A shipment contains three product lines: - Product A: 45cm × 35cm × 30cm, 200 units - Product B: 60cm × 50cm × 40cm, 80 units - Product C: 30cm × 30cm × 25cm, 500 units Calculate each separately, then sum: - Product A: (0.45 × 0.35 × 0.30) × 200 = 9.45 CBM - Product B: (0.60 × 0.50 × 0.40) × 80 = 9.6 CBM - Product C: (0.30 × 0.30 × 0.25) × 500 = 11.25 CBM Total shipment: 9.45 + 9.6 + 11.25 = 30.3 CBM At 30.3 CBM, this shipment exceeds a 20ft container (25 CBM) but comfortably fits a 40ft Standard (55 CBM) with room for future stock — the kind of calculation that determines whether you're paying for wasted container space or booking LCL unnecessarily.

Air Freight Volumetric Weight

Air freight uses volumetric weight when it exceeds actual weight. Formula: Vol. Weight (kg) = L (cm) × W (cm) × H (cm) ÷ 6000 Example: Package 80cm × 60cm × 40cm, actual weight 15 kg: Vol. Weight = 80 × 60 × 40 ÷ 6000 = 32 kg Charged weight = 32 kg (volumetric, higher than actual 15 kg) Compact, dense cargo ships more economically by air — packaging optimization is critical.

Common CBM Calculation Mistakes

A few errors account for most CBM miscalculations: - Mixing units — measuring in centimeters but forgetting to divide by 100 before multiplying, resulting in a CBM figure that's off by a factor of a million. - Ignoring packaging dimensions — calculating CBM from the product's dimensions rather than its packed carton dimensions, which are always larger. - Forgetting volumetric weight on air freight — assuming actual weight determines cost, then being surprised when volumetric weight is charged instead. - Not accounting for irregular stacking — CBM assumes efficient cuboid stacking; oddly shaped or non-stackable cargo often needs 10–15% more effective volume than the raw calculation suggests.

CBM and FTWZ Storage Costs

Inside an FTWZ, storage charges are typically calculated per CBM per day, or per pallet position per month — which means knowing your cargo's exact CBM isn't just useful for freight booking, it directly determines your ongoing storage cost while goods sit duty-deferred. This matters more in an FTWZ than in a conventional warehouse, because FTWZ storage often runs longer — goods can remain under customs supervision for up to 3 years, extendable to 5 years with special permission, rather than moving straight to distribution. A shipment's CBM, multiplied by however long it sits before partial or full DTA clearance, is the real cost driver — not just the freight cost to get it there. That has a practical implication for inventory planning: consolidating smaller, irregular shipments into denser, better-stacked pallets before storage can meaningfully reduce your CBM footprint and, by extension, your monthly storage cost — independent of how much duty you're deferring.
