A larger coastal movement could potentially bring the material closer to the market, where it can be stored and released according to production requirements. Here, weight is only one part of the problem. The logistics team may need to consider overall dimensions, centre of gravity, lifting points, crane capacity, vessel suitability, road restrictions and final-site access. For particularly large or heavy shipments, route surveys and engineering input may be required before movement. Coastal shipping can potentially form part of such a project logistics plan where the vessel, ports and inland route are suitable.

Load Distribution and Cargo Securing

Heavy steel cargo also needs careful attention to load distribution. A 10-tonne cargo unit isn't simply "10 tonnes" from a transportation perspective — where that weight sits can affect handling and stability. For road movements, axle loads and applicable transport regulations need to be considered; for vessel movements, stowage and cargo securing need to be planned appropriately. But suppose customer demand is spread over six weeks. The company could instead evaluate a multimodal option: Import → Western Port → Coastal Shipping → Southern Port → Warehouse → Customer. The coastal leg could handle the larger movement, while the warehouse provides a buffer between vessel arrival and customer demand, with final deliveries scheduled according to actual requirements. Whether this model is cheaper or operationally better would depend on actual freight rates, port charges, warehouse costs and transit times — the broader principle is that transport and inventory decisions are often connected.

When Coastal Shipping May Not Make Sense

Direct road transport may remain more suitable when the shipment is small, the customer needs immediate delivery, the distance is relatively short, there's no convenient port connection, or the destination is far from the discharge port. But it should not be viewed as a universal replacement for road transport. Road remains highly flexible. Coastal shipping can offer an alternative for suitable long-distance movements.
